Irving Penn

Irving Penn worked as a designer and photographer for Vogue magazine from 1944 , his images are based on the natural beauty of a woman , he used basic background and natural lighting to create his images. The organic nature of his work grasped a wide audience of readers  for the 1940's Vogue Magazine .

In this image angular lines have been creating through the make up designs, styling and pose, this gives a continuous theme through out and reflects that the model may has a hard exterior to her personality , as she is positioned as though she is protecting herself from the camera . I think this is something that I need to think about when constructed my images as Julia is conscious of being watch so her movements need to reflect this according to the stages of the books.

Julia is described in the book to be "bold","freckled", "dark lashes" and a "wide red mouth"
I believe this image reflects the character of Julia I would like to test with make up and freckles to see how extreme I can produce them , although for continuity as they will be drawn on they must remain the same on ever image so creating this many freckles may be difficult . This is something I will test .

I like the isolation that has be created by the pose in this image , there is narrative behind this image which leaves the viewer asking why this woman is facing away from the camera she almost looks dead.
The styling has also been well thought out as the bed sheet and the night dress are the same colour, so at first glance it is difficult to decipher where the clothing starts and the sheet stops . This adds to the narrative of the image as it could be trying to say that she is a prisoner in her bed, trapped within the sheets .

The harsh contrast between the black and white makes the image appear as illustration , it looks like a drawing. I like how the subtle tones of make up cause emotion in the models gaze . The hands on her head add a essence of anguish to the portrait .

In 1984 Julia is seducing Winston I like how this image has cut the head off , the face is not needed to add seduction , the position of the chest and hands shows this in a formal way .

Another image of freckles although these are not the main focus of the image . Penn has used lighting in the eyes to create a story in the eyes , the viewer is looking into her eyes to see what the woman is looking at . What situation is this model in ? what has she just seen ?
