1940's Fashion Designers

Marjorie Field Fashion Designer in the 1940's 

Fashion became regulated in the 40's due to World War II , the government had strict rations on materials and the type of materials that were previously available was no longer due to countries not selling to England . Although these restrictions meant that fashion changed, couture became a phenomenon, here are some designs by Marjorie Field who designed couture  for her firm Field Rhoades, which were recently exhibited in the V & A .

The hair has been designed in victory rolls and the hat has been placed on the opposite side, this gives a balance to the head.The dress is quite low cut as the button only start around the bust area . The dress also has a collar and rolled up sleeves which relates back to my styling decision with the blazer for image 1 . 

These images show the style of couture that was being made in the 40's they are show the colour tones. In the last image blue and red have been brought together like in Julia's outfit . The silhouettes of the drawings also show the shape of a woman in the 40's which depict a small waist and  shapely hips . 

Visit to the V & A Primary Research

Realising that the focus of my research for this project is on the 1940's I went to visit the V&A in London to look at primary sources from the era . Here are some on my findings :

Here are images of original posters for events around the 40's , this shows the typography, layout and colour themes that would have been used . This will be useful if I decide to add text to the final images, this is something I am unsure on at this stage , until I have seen the final images, they may have enough impact on their own. However, I will be creating a Newspeak dictionary that will have text on the front cover .

Here are some examples of 40's jewellery , although this may not be something that is included in my final image as Julia is not described to wear jewellery. However , it was good to see these first hand and see how the 40's women would have dressed and also the colour tones that would have been used throughout the era .

Here are food advertisements that would have been published in the 40's, again this shows the type of imagery that George Orwell would have seen and the only colour that is bold in the book is the posters of Big Brother .

This is an image designer clothing in the 40's which shows the nipped in waist , this style of clothing enhances the natural shape of a woman .

Styling for images - influenced by 40's

I have researched previously into the 1940's fashion however I have posted some images of the fashion from the 1940's to be used to compare the modern fashion that has been inspired by the era . As this brief asks for a Fashion image the clothing used within my images will be contemporary pieces that have been inspired by the styles of the 40's .

Tight nipped in waists brought out the hips in a women and this is how Julia is described within the book , the red sash which she wears , brings in the waist . This attracts the attention of Winston as this is the only thing about Julia that is constantly repeated.

Working women would wear dungarees and I would like this to be developed and displayed in my images , as Julia's overall is never described as any but blue . This leaves scope to develop how a blue overall can be represented within a fashion image . Dungarees have made a come back in fashion within recent months.

1940's Land Girls in overall's I would like to interpret this style within my image . 

Catwalk shows that have been influenced by the 40's fashion. This also shows have fashion can be adapted by the use of styling and be automatically associated with an era even though it is a contemporary . I would like my images to have a instant recognisable aspect of the 40's as this is the era that would have influenced George Orwell in the writing of the 40's.

This style of contemporary fashion blazer will be used on the first image of the shoot (which is a mid length shot ) to interpret the blue overall that Julia wears with in 1984. I will use a red sash to gather the material together to recreate a 1940's inspired styling .

Throughout the book Julia is described to wear blue overall with a red sash , looking into the style of overall worn in the 1940's I have decided to style my second image in denim dungarees, these reflect the style of the 1940's but also add a contemporary edge to the image . This will be the full length shot and Julia will be bare footed as it is stated that many people in Oceania don't wear shoes due to the rationing of clothing and living accessories . 

Image 3 Styling 

Image 3 will be a nude shot as Julia has just got out of bed naked , this will just be a head shot however mesh may be used to cover the face to represent that Julia is now trapped . 

Housing and Location in the 1940's

Inside a 1940's house , the radio is the main part of the room as people would be listening to music, news and war reports .

Although this is London during the bombings these are the buildings that society would have been living in , also the hazy skys are represented in 1984.

This is pictures is what i think Orwell was trying to reflect in his description of the Proles housing and location . This is the pat of Oceania which gets bombed and has hole of plaster dust and rubble left from previous bombs.

This image shows an image of a street in London thats has not been bombed , I imagine the streets of Oceania to appear like this where the Inner Party lives .

Senate House building now part of the University of London. 

It is clear in th ebook that this is the building , the vast pyramid shapes and thousands of glass windows.
